If the web marketing world had a single mantra, we believe it should be
this: "HAPPINESS IS ORGANIC RANKINGS ... ON GENERIC TERMS ... WITH
PERVASIVE COVERAGE."
If you agree, then you should appreciate what
PervasivePersuasion.com is all about. If you wonder what this
really means, or why it should be important to you, please read on:
Why Organic Rankings?
99% of all Internet users reference search engines, and search engines
return three types of results: sponsored, alternative and
organic. If you want your website to be found when someone searches
on your targeted terms, then it better be included in one of these three.
Inclusion in sponsored results requires that you bid for terms and pay
for each click. Also known as pay-per-click advertising, this visibility
demands an ongoing investment of time, to monitor your bid position, and
money to pay for each click. Including your website in alternative
results (e.g. Yahoo! Local) may or may not be possible or desirable, and
may or may not cost you money. The availability and advisability of
alternative listings varies by search engine, program and keyphrase.
The best way to be seen is inclusion in organic results. Also
called natural results, these are web page listings served up in rank
order as determined by the search engine's ranking algorithm. And why are
organic rankings the best place to be seen? Here are two very important
reasons:
First of all, it's FREE! You don't pay for inclusion, and you pay
nothing for clicks. Secondly, studies show that many people value organic
rankings more so than sponsored listings. In fact, a significant
percentage of search engine users believe that organic rankings
equate to website ratings!

Why Generic Terms? |
 |
| According to a recent study by ComScore Networks and
DoubleClick, about half of all online shoppers conduct research on
search engines before they make a purchase. And when they do, 77% of
those searches are on generic terms, as compared to 23% on terms
including brand names.
If you have a website selling Wrangler blue jeans, for example,
this study suggests that organic rankings on branded terms like
Wrangler or Wrangler jeans would be valuable. More
valuable, however--in fact, over 3 times as valuable-- would be
rankings on the generic term blue jeans.

Why Pervasive Coverage? |
 |
| Now that we understand the web marketing value of organic
rankings on generic terms, the next question is "Which terms to
target?" We believe the answer should be "All that apply!"
The English language (like others) often has many ways of
conveying the same or similar concepts, and frequently more than one
way to correctly spell a word. And if a given word or phrase has
positioning value, it stands to reason that so would any similar or
analogous terms.
If someone was looking for a lawyer, might they also
search for an attorney? If they were hungry for a bbq
sandwich, might they search for barbecue, barbeque or
even bar-b-q? If you wanted to sell your house, would you
search for a real estate agency, a real estate agent,
a real estate broker, a realtor or a realty
company? And in the example above, if the generic term
jeans has positioning value, then what about denims,
pants, britches, slacks or trousers?
Pervasive coverage is what you want. Context research is how you
get it ... and a call to Bruce Arnold is where it all begins!

Best Tool for Tracking |
 |
A timeless business axiom states: If it's
not measured, it's not managed. Nowhere is this more applicable than
in the evaluation of website traffic statistics and web marketing
results.
We believe that web traffic monitors should be
comprehensive, confidential and convenient. One
that stands out to us as best of breed is Web-Stat: Its detailed yet
easy-to-follow reports not only show you traffic trends and referral
sources sliced several different ways, but also break out which
keyphrases people are typing into what search engines in order to
find you.
The insights this provides for improved targeting and increased
traffic are absolutely invaluable. Click their ad at left or the

Standards Compliance |
 |
The World Wide Web Consortium
(W3C) was established in 1994 to lead the World Wide Web to its full
potential by developing standards and protocols that promote its
evolution while assuring interoperability. Validating web page
adherence to these standards and protocols insures that all
users--regardless of their culture, language, education, ability,
material resources, access devices or physical limitations--have
equal access to the resources of your website.
The impact and importance of HTML and CSS validation to winning
web design is frequently overlooked, but should not be
underestimated. Validation assures that your web pages can be
properly read and interpreted, regardless of what
standards-compliant user agent might be employed to view your site.
These include not only Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator and
Mozilla Firefox but all other graphical browsers, text-mode
browsers, text-to-speech synthesizers, site robots and analysis
tools, language translators and search engine spiders.
According to a January 2005 survey of all web design firms with
page one placements on Google, MSN Search or Yahoo for the term
web design miami, only PervasivePersuasion.com was
found to have 100% W3C standards compliant coding. The other 25 web
designer sites tested were found to have as many as 171 errors on
their home page alone!
Are your web pages--or your web designer's pages--W3C Standards
Compliant?
