What's in a Name?
A rose by any other name, may not rank as high.... I
am talking about domain names. A "domain name"
locates an entity on the Internet. For example, the
domain name "www.pervasivepersuasion.com" locates a
host server named "www" at
domain "pervasivepersuasion.com". The "com" part of
the name reflects the purpose of the entity
(i.e. "com"mercial), and is called the top-level domain
name. The "pervasivepersuasion" part of the name
defines the entity and, together with the top-level, is
called the second-level domain name. Second-level
domain names must be unique and registered with an
ICANN-accredited registrar.
On the Web, the domain name is the part of the
Uniform Resource Locator (URL) that tells a domain
name server whether and where to forward a request
for a web page. The domain name system (DNS) maps
the names to IP addresses (e.g., 111.123.67.5). More
than one domain name can be mapped to the same IP
address, which means more than one name might be
used to reference a website.
CHOOSING THE RIGHT DOMAIN NAME can contribute
greatly to the success of a business website. There is
a long list of do's and don'ts associated with
domain name selection, but the most important rule is
this: A GOOD DOMAIN NAME HAS EITHER
BRANDING OR POSITIONING VALUE, AND A GREAT
DOMAIN NAME HAS BOTH.
For example: When we last searched Google for
a "CPA", all of the top 10 websites returned had "CPA"
as part of their domain name. When we tapped MSN
Search for "Kendall business" references, 12 of the
first 15 had either "Kendall" or "business" in their web
address. And when we went to AltaVista seeking
a "Miami mortgage", of the first 10 non-sponsored
matches, 5 had either "Miami" or "mortgage" in their
domain name, and the top 2 had both.
"Catering2Miami.com", "TelephoneFlorida.com"
and "LoansMilitary.com" are all great domain names. Do
you see why? "CorporateFlightSolutions.com"
and "CorporateFlightAttendants.com" both reference
the same website. Do you see why? YOUR DOMAIN
NAME MAY NOT BE BRINGING QUALIFIED TRAFFIC TO
YOUR WEBSITE. Do you see why? Call 786-326-8079

Branding Your Email |
 |
If you have a website, you should brand your domain
name on everything: your business cards, letterhead,
brochures, advertising, storefront, door panels, and
YOUR EMAIL.
Every time you send an email, your email address makes
an impression. Recipients may not always read
everything you send, but they will almost always read
your
address. That means that every email you send could
be an advertisement for your business ... IF your email
address ends with "@YourDomain.com".
Every email address is an ad for somebody. If your
address is "YourName123@yahoo.com", you are
promoting your web portal, Yahoo. If your address
is "YourName456@earthlink.net", your are promoting
your
Internet access provider, Earthlink. But if your
address is "YourName@YourDomain.com", you are
promoting yourself!
Have you ever received email from a Global 2000
company with a reply address that
ended "@Hotmail.com"? Is the telephone company
giving you free minutes for
promoting "BellSouth.net"? Have you ever received a
check from Time Warner with a thank you for
advertising "AOL.com"? If the answer is NO, then it
may be time for a change of address. Bruce Arnold can
help with that ... just give us a call.

Gateways to Freedom |
 |
Many users of proprietary email systems like AOL Mail
fail to take advantage of "email branding" because they
think they are limited to what that system gives them.
NOT SO. Here is a quote from AskMisterEmail.com:
"AOL and webmail providers like Hotmail and Yahoo each
have their own non-standard mail protocols. That limits
the ways in which you can access those accounts
(e.g., AOL is accessed by AOL software or Netscape 7;
Hotmail is accessed via the web or Outlook/Outlook
Express). Hotmail and Yahoo provide relatively little
server space, which limits the amount of mail you can
store. But there are conversion programs available,
which allow you to download messages from those
accounts into a standard POP3 email program, and to
send outgoing messages [using SMTP] from your
standard program as well."
This web page has some important information on email
gateways:
AOL users should make special note of
AOL2Pop, which can be
purchased at "http://www.aol2pop.com". Products like
AOL2Pop can liberate users from the restrictions and
deficiencies of AOL Mail by enabling the POP3 and SMTP
protocol support required to send and receive email
addressed "@YourDomain.com". We encourage you to
check them out! Also, please use the "Forward email"
link at the bottom of this page to share this information
with others who might benefit.
